Soliciting definition: requesting, asking for something, (money, help or information). Usually someone is selling something or a service and asking for your hard earned money in return.
As you could imagine, Crime Watch programs do not like strangers roaming through their community. Security becomes even more problematic when criminals go door-to-door disguised as solicitors scouting properties for future burglary. Florida, with it's wealthy, elderly population, is the fraud capital of the US and Tampa Bay is one of the top 5 areas. Fraud has been on the increase in Pride Civic with unlicensed tree trimmers, fake auto repairs, and others going door-to-door.
While signs would discourage solicitation, some groups are exempt. A few of these include: news, charities, patriotic and religious groups. In addition, companies you have done business with in the past can still come knocking.
Some salespeople consider a no soliciting sign as a personal challenge. While it isn't against the law for them to ignore the signs, you can inform them of our neighborhood policy and send them on their way. Below is a PDF file you can print to hand out to solicitors with a map of Pride Neighborhood borders.
Adults (and adults supervising minors) selling, renting, leasing consumer goods or services with a price in excess of $25 must have a Home Solicitation Permit. You are encouraged to call Consumer Protection (727) 464-6200 if you suspect a violation of solicitation sales.
One vitally important question that came up: Would this stop Girl Scout Cookie sales? If you are an "existing customer", they can continue to deliver your thin mints?
